Electrical discharge machining (EDM) is a kind of nonconventional machining method that uses directly electrical energy. Since there is no physical contact between a workpiece and an electrode during a machining process, it is possible to machine hard-to-cut materials regardless of their strength and hardness. The discharge sparks that occurs between the workpiece and the electrode erodes material not only from the workpiece, but also from the electrode. The eroded workpiece is disfigured, and this causes dimension error that is different from demanded size of the machined parts. Therefore, additional machining processes are needed to correct the error from the electrode wear problem, and productivity decreases. Generally, this is a serious problem in EDM process. In order to overcome the wear problems, the strip EDM was developed. This machining process uses thin conductive strip as an electrode. The strip electrode is supplied continuously to machining gap. In the discharge gap, the worn electrode is removed immediately and the new electrode is supplied. This thin electrode slides on the electrode guide, and the initial electrode shape is not deformed. Therefore, the dimension and shape errors are prevented. This paper introduced the principles of strip EDM and discusses its applications such as milling, turning, and grooving.
